Trump's Woke Alarm Overlooks The Continent's Real Danger: Economic Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document presents a misguided assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" policies pose an existential risk to European civilization. However, this perspective is based on a fundamental misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not cultural but economic and technological lag.

The Stark Economic Gap Separating the US and Europe

Statistics reveal a stark picture. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by eighty-seven percent, while a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Remarkably, even the poorest US state now has a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are US-based, while a mere four are European.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

This widening economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by breakthroughs and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology leadership is decidedly US-centric. Over the past five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in Europe.

This disparity raises a pressing question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and fusion energy, where does Europe stand? Experts widely agree it is largely a two-horse race between the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Technological Lag

Several major factors account for this innovation chasm.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for financing new ventures. The EU has yet to establish a true unified investment market, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Complex and divided rules hamper Europe. A American entrepreneur can launch a product under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate regimes, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's chronic underinvestment in defense has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these challenges, there are causes for optimism. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have begun to advance substantial change. Key reports on European competitiveness and the internal market point to the need for sweeping changes.

With the right incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

The continent still possesses significant advantages: skilled human capital, excellent education systems, and premier research institutions. Alongside a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing cutting-edge tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now stands at a decisive moment. To paraphrase a famous line, decline often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been gradual. But, without bold steps to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's slow erosion could give way to a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
