Jair Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities determined he posed a concrete flight risk while under domestic detention.

The former head of state was found guilty of plotting a military coup in last fall and sentenced more than 27 years in jail, but he remained under home detention pending court reviews.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after "new facts" came to light.

This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could enable a chance to flee".

Legal Document Reveals Flight Fears

In a document approving the detention, the judge said data from the centre monitoring his home detention suggested the one-time head of state's aim to disable the tracking monitor to secure accomplishment in his flight.

This, it said, would be "facilitated by the chaos caused by the gathering called by his son.

His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a legislator, called for a gathering of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.

His son wrote on social media on last Friday: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your couch? I urge you to fight with us."

Details of Guilty Verdict

Bolsonaro was determined responsible of heading a conspiracy aimed at maintaining his control after he lost the 2022 election to his ideological adversary, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Top judicial officials said that he had knowledge of a plot which included plans to murder his opponent and his running partner, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the High Court judge who has been overseeing his judicial proceedings.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been encouraged by the former president whose strategy, they said, was for the Brazilian military to intervene, restore order and return him to office.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the 27 years and three months sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also banned from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the conclusion of his imprisonment.

The former president called the court case a political persecution and said it was designed to prevent him participating in the 2026 presidential election.
