Weather experts are reporting a frosty beginning to the new year, with snow anticipated over large parts of the UK. Celebrants are advised to wrap up as bitterly cold temperatures are predicted for New Year's Eve.
Celebratory Events Proceed Amid Alerts
Edinburgh's famous Hogmanay festivities are expected to proceed, a contrast to last year's calling-off. This is in spite of yellow warnings for snow in northern Scotland.
"A cold New Year's Eve night for those partying, so warmer clothes will be essential," said the Met Office.
Fireworks Under Clear but Chilly Skies
Elsewhere in the UK, the weather is expected to be ideal for fireworks displays, with no rain and open skies. The mercury are due to be low, so additional clothing essential, as per forecasters.
To the north, conditions will be more overcast, but this is unlikely to hamper visibility for viewing fireworks. "There is no expectation of low cloud, mist or murk, so you ought to be able to see fireworks, just not stars," commented one forecaster.
Widespread Snow Warnings for New Year's Day
Heading into Friday, snow alerts are active for Northern Ireland and stretching from Wales, over the north-west, the West Midlands and through to London and most of the south-east of England.
- Commuting is likely to be impacted.
- The public are advised to allow extra time for trips on the road.
- Disruptions and cancellations are expected on public transport.
Readings Set to Drop Even More
With the start of 2026, it will be "chilly no matter where you are," said forecaster Simon Partridge. The weather are forecast to drop further as snowfall and high winds are likely to affect the north of the country.
Approximately 10cm of snow is expected to have accumulated in some areas by Friday morning, with up to 30cm on the most elevated routes and peaks.
Public Health Advisories Released
Meanwhile, amber cold health alerts have been issued for the north-east and north-west of England. These are expected to continue until noon on 5 January, with the mercury likely to fall to between 3C and 5C.
Officials stated this meant the weather was likely to cause notable consequences across health and social care services. This includes a likely increase in the mortality rate among those with health conditions or those 65 and older.
The advice for all is clear: to see the new year in security, wrapping up warm is absolutely essential.
