The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US on five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans targeted individuals who have been central to campaigns to enact laws regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday on an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as several anti-disinformation campaigners, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
