Crew Member Shares Emotional Distress In the Wake of ‘Tsunami of Backlash After Historic Trip

A Vietnamese-American astronaut has spoken candidly about her battle with depression after enduring a “tsunami of harassment” in the aftermath of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

Amanda Nguyen – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the short-duration mission in April, which also carried high-profile passengers.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who cited its expense and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the intense backlash overshadowed her achievement under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a social media post, describing a check-in call from a mission companion in the period after the flight.

She characterized the news reports and online discourse as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“Stuck in Texas, I spent a week unable to rise from my bed,” she confessed. “Weeks after, I was forced to terminate a call, my voice choked by tears.”

Overshadowed by Sexism

Ms. Nguyen, who has conducted studies in women's health research and conducted tests during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and extensive preparation to the symbolic importance of her heritage – was drowned out under the tide of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work fighting for justice for victims of sexual violence.

Her own goal of reaching space was put on hold after an attack during her college days, leading to a protracted legal battle.

The Fog Begins to Lift

Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the deepest pain is gradually receding, and she acknowledged the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that despite the negativity, important benefits had emerged from the mission, including elevated attention for her scientific work and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The computer-piloted New Shepard rocket lifted off from its launch site in April, carrying the historic roster on a 11-minute journey that passed the internationally recognized boundary of space.
